All Yoruba names have meanings. Indeed it has been said that you can learn the Yoruba language by studying the names, after all, these names are all sentences in their own right and are only contracted for practical use.

Yorubas pay particular attention to the physical characteristics and circumstances surrounding the birth of a child. In addition, names are also given that reflect the religion, profession and cultural roots of the family.

Thus Yoruba names can be broadly classified into two categories:

1.Destiny Names (brought from heaven)

2. AcquiredNames(given on earth)

Most prominent amongst the destiny names are  Taiwo and Kehinde, the name reserved for twins.

Do you know that it is in Yoruba land that the highest incidence of twin deliveries occurs in the whole world ?. This is in the Ibarapa area, not far from Abeokuta.

Let us now examine some Yoruba names and their meanings.
